Examination Stress and Solutions

Dear all,

.

How to overcome Examination Stress?

.
.
.

The major causes of stress for students are exams. Exam stress varies from student to student. There are some students who are better at handling exam stress.

A lot of students find that the stress before exams is often worse than the actual examination and it can be made even worse if they are compared with others within the family who have already done well and hence feel pressurized to match up to their standards.

.

Tips for reducing examination stress
.
A) Start planning for the examinations well before the exams begin.
.
B) Prepare brief notes to make the subject easier and quicker to digest, especially if you don’t like the subject or find it difficult.
.
C) Study during the time of the day that suits you the most. Some students prefer studying till late night while others prefer to wake up very early in the morning to study. But ensure that you get enough sleep of atleast six hours per day. A 10 to 15 minute nap anytime during the day will help a lot in refreshing yourself.
.
D) If you have difficulty in concentrating, take a short break of about 15 minutes. This break could be utilized as relaxation time in which you don’t even think about your studies – you listen to light music, munch something, do yoga, use breathing and relaxation techniques, do whatever you enjoy and whatever helps you to feel relaxed. That way you will feel more motivated to continue revising after your relaxation time.
.
E) Identify the difficult topics and prepare a revision timetable accordingly.
.
F) Highlight the difficult portions and make a list of all the doubts. Discuss with your friends / teachers to ensure all the doubts are cleared.
.
G) Always seek help if there are things you don’t understand, and especially if you are feeling stressed out.
.
H) After every chapter, try solving the relevant questions from the previous examination papers.
.
I) Relieve your stress by exercise, aerobics, walking, cycling, swimming, dancing once or twice during the week
.
J) Make sure you spend time together with all your family members at least for 15 minutes each day.
.
K) Have a balanced diet. Keep intake of fluids high. Make sure that you always have your breakfast, otherwise, you will feel restless and out of energy throughout the day and will not be in the right frame of mind to study. You can only concentrate properly when you are physically and mentally fit.
.
L) Never go to sleep straight after revising – you need to have some relaxation before the end of the day. Maybe have a relaxing bath and do meditation before going to bed.
.

M) A couple of days before the commencement of examinations, check out the details of the examination and make sure you know when and where the examinations will be held.
.
N) Don’t do last minute revision. Stop all studies the night preceding the examination. Have faith on yourself.
.
O) Prepare everything the night before, your dress, shoes, socks, etc. that you will be wearing, check that you have packed your bag with everything you will need – hall-ticket, pens, writing pad, water bottle, and so on. On the morning of the exam, tension can make you forget something important.
.
P) On the day of your exams, get up early so you can take things at your own pace – don’t rush and get panicky. Stay cool and relaxed.
.
Q) Have a good nourishing breakfast. Keep all books away.
.
R) Give yourself plenty of time to reach the examination hall.
.
S) Do not carry any study material like notes, books, etc. with you to the examination centre.

.
T) Avoid last minute revision.
.
U) Visit the loo and relieve yourself just before the exam starts.
.
V) Read the complete question paper carefully before starting the examination as that will give you an idea of how much time you will need for each question. Many students fare badly because they misread the questions.
.
W) If you can’t answer a question – don’t panic – go onto the questions you feel more confident about and come back to the more difficult ones afterwards. Pick the choices judiciously.
.
X) Keep an eye on the time and follow instructions carefully.
.
Y) If you feel getting stressed and panicky- take some deep breaths, slow down breathing, this will help you to calm down.
.
Z) Always keep 10-15 minutes for revising the answer paper, check for mistakes and ensure that you have numbered the questions correctly and have answered all the questions.
.
And finally, don’t crib after your exams. You have done your best. Give yourself a pat and commence studying for the next examination.
